Remember your first time? No, not that first time. >_< Your first time seeing a patient, silly! Were you nervous? Scared you would screw up? Terrified that they would finally see you for the fraud that you are? I know I sure was and that I’ll probably still be for a long […]

I am certainly annoyed today to put it lightly. It’s a long story, so I won’t bother, but of course, it has to do with the in-laws, who I have the distinct pleasure of having to visit this weekend and the fact that my husband continues to refuse to see them for the evil […]

I have a habit of coming up with things while I’m sleeping or half asleep, especially in the morning. And this morning (while I was still more than half asleep), I was thinking about how disappointing this whole grad school thing has been for me, what with the one step away from abusive major […]

I’ve been kind of blah lately—missing medical school. And it has nothing to do with the fact that my PhD is going absolutely nowhere. Right… As much as I think some medical students are a little lacking in the brains department, they’re for the most part the people I can relate to […]

So I’ve been feeling particularly stuck in a rut lately and it’s really wearing me down. There are just too many things I have going on that are unresolved. And I really can’t stand unresolved things. They drive me crazy. And the more things that I have just hanging, the more […]

With all of the unpleasantness of trying to set up my qualifying exam, it’s only fitting that this week’s inspirational music song be for the grad student. The song for this week is: Soft Cell – Tainted Love or what I affectionately think of as Tainted Lab.
Here’s an excerpt:
Sometimes I feel I’ve got to
Run […]

» The 10 dirtiest jobs in science.  Hey, they forgot to include being your major professor’s bitch.  Okay, I guess that isn’t quite as literally dirty as those on the list, but it sure feels like it is. # 0

» Yum!  Now that’s something I can live with: eating curry to stave off cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.  Researchers in Singapore found that people (aged 60-93) who ate curry even only occasionally scored higher on the Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE) than those who never ate curry.  The curry spice, turmeric, contains curcumin, which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  And the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly in India is fourfold less than that in the United States. # 0

» There’s a great article today about how the MIT Dean of Admissions wants to reduce admissions anxiety in teenagers.  How about parents getting off of their kids’ backs?  That would help.  But I do admire her for trying to create a friendlier system that might just ease the pressure enough to not give parents such reason to push their kids so hard.  Too bad it probably won’t happen any time soon.  And go ahead and try to tell Asian parents to stop pushing their kids to the point of insanity.  I dare you. # 0
